Alarplasty (alar base reduction) is a surgical procedure performed by Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle on the Gold Coast. It involves adjusting the width or shape of the nostrils to alter their overall appearance in proportion to the rest of the nose. Suitability for this procedure can only be confirmed following a consultation and clinical assessment.
Alarplasty is generally performed as a day surgery procedure. Temporary swelling or bruising may occur after surgery and usually settles within the first few weeks. Recovery times vary, but most people can expect the healing process to take several weeks.
What is Alarplasty?
Alar nose surgery (alarplasty) is a procedure that alters the width or shape of the nostrils. It may be performed on its own or as part of a rhinoplasty, depending on the individual’s nasal structure and treatment goals.
This procedure can address nostril width or flaring that occurs due to genetic or anatomical factors. The aim is to achieve balance and proportion in relation to the rest of the nose and face. Suitability for alarplasty can only be confirmed following an assessment by a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon.
Rhinoplasty
Alarplasty Results
As a Specialist Plastic Surgeon who performs rhinoplasty procedures, Dr Mark Doyle recognises that each person’s nasal structure is unique. During your consultation, he will assess your nasal anatomy and discuss an appropriate surgical plan based on your individual needs.
Alarplasty surgery involves reducing or reshaping the nostril base. Incisions are typically positioned within the natural creases or internal areas of the nostrils to help minimise visible scarring, although healing and scar appearance can vary between individuals.
If you are considering surgery involving the nostrils, it is important to consult with a qualified and experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeon to discuss the potential risks, benefits and recovery process.
Different Types of Alarplasty
Alar Base Surgery
This type of alarplasty involves making an incision in the outer crease of the nose. Dr Doyle will then remove a small wedge of tissue to narrow the nostril. This method is used when there is excess skin or cartilage that needs to be removed; i.e., when the nostrils are wide.
Alar Rim Surgery
Alar rim surgery, also known as an alar rim graft, is a type of alarplasty that involves adding cartilage to the outside of the nostrils. This technique may be used if your nostrils are retracted. Adding cartilage can bring the nostril height down, so that you can see less of the inside lining of the nose.
Tip Plasty and Alar Base Reduction
This is a combination procedure that addresses the nasal tip as well as the nostrils. During this procedure, Dr Doyle will make an incision in the outer nose crease and remove a small wedge of tissue. This will narrow the nostril opening. Also, Dr Doyle will do nose tip reduction to change the shape of the nose.
This procedure is not suitable for people who prefer to change the bridge of their nose. Dr Doyle can decide if this is the recommended surgery for you, during your consultation.
Alar Reduction Procedure
Nostril reduction surgery is done under general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital. This means you’ll be asleep for the duration of the surgery.
During the surgery, Dr Doyle will make an incision in the outer crease of the nose on the alar base. Then he’ll remove a small wedge of tissue to narrow the nostril opening. In some cases, he may also need to trim the cartilage on the outside of the nostril.
After the surgery, you’ll have dressings on your nose alar to support it during healing. Our nurses will remove these a few days following your surgery.
Recovery
It’s normal to experience some swelling and bruising after an alar nostril flare reduction. This usually subsides after a week or two. You’ll also have some pain and discomfort, which can be controlled with pain medication.
You’ll need to take it easy for the first few days after your surgery. Avoid strenuous activity and exercise for at least eight weeks. You should also avoid blowing your nose and wearing glasses during your alarplasty recovery period. Full recovery takes approximately 6 weeks.
Best Candidate
Alarplasty is a focused nasal procedure that alters the width or shape of the nostrils without changing overall facial structure. Suitability for this surgery depends on individual anatomy and goals and should be assessed during a consultation with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon. You may be considered for alarplasty if you:
- Prefer to reduce the size of your large nostrils
- Consider your nose either 'wide' or 'narrow'
- Have a flared nose on resting and/or your nose flares when you smile
- Would like to address symmetry concerns
The suitability for alarplasty depends on several factors, including overall physical health, psychological readiness for surgery and non-smoking status. Individuals considering this procedure to address the width or shape of their nostrils can discuss their options during a consultation with Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle.
FAQs
Alarplasty, also known as nostril reduction surgery, is a procedure performed by a Specialist Plastic Surgeon to alter the width or shape of the nostrils.
Nasal flaring is when the nostrils open up wider than normal, usually due to inflammation in the nose. This can be caused by allergies, a cold, or sinusitis.
Some individuals have nostrils that appear wider or more flared due to genetic or anatomical factors.
Individuals considering surgery to address the width or shape of their nostrils may be suitable candidates for alarplasty (nostril reduction surgery). This procedure involves modifying the nostril base to achieve a balanced proportion with the rest of the nose and face. Suitability can only be confirmed after assessment by a Specialist Plastic Surgeon.
Yes, alarplasty leaves scars. This nostril reduction scar is placed in the crease of the nose, where the nose meets the cheek. As it’s in the natural curve of the nose, these scars can generally be difficult to see. With proper scar management, scars should fade within the first 12 months following surgery.
The structural changes achieved with alarplasty are typically long-lasting; however, results can vary between individuals due to factors such as healing, skin thickness and scar formation.
Every surgery carries risks, which is why it’s important to choose an experienced specialist plastic surgeon. The risks of alarplasty include swelling, bruising, asymmetry and scarring. Further risks will be discussed during your initial consultation with Dr Doyle.
Alarplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia, so patients are not conscious during the procedure. As with any surgery, some discomfort may be experienced during recovery. This is generally managed with prescribed pain relief and postoperative care instructions from your surgical team.
