Facial Fat Transfer

Facial fat transfer is a surgical solution for volume loss in the face. It's a popular procedure that uses micro amounts of fat to plump up areas of the face.

In this procedure, the fat comes from the body and gets transferred into an area of your choice. This is usually the cheeks, under-eyes or nasolabial folds. As a result, face fat injections can produce natural-looking results with minimal scarring.

*Please Note – Dr Doyle only performs facial fat grafting as an ‘add-on’ to other surgical procedures. It will not be performed as a stand alone procedure.

What is a Facial Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer is the injection of fat into the face to create a more contoured appearance. This adds volume to the face, improves facial contours, and fills in wrinkles and facial creases.

Fat transfer face is sometimes called fat grafting, or fat injections. It’s an ideal treatment for lost facial volume – which usually occurs as a result of natural ageing. The procedure helps create a more youthful appearance, particularly in the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area. It’s also beneficial for skin tightening on face, as the addition of fat can fill loose skin to create a tighter appearance.

In this treatment, tiny amounts of fat get harvested, usually from your tummy or thighs. Then, micro droplets of this fat get injected into the desired facial regions to add volume.

What (Dr Doyle Believes) Makes a Good Facial Fat Grafting Result

Dr Doyle believes that fat transfer for face looks best when the results appear natural. The procedure should help you look younger and more refreshed. At the same time, the face should always look natural, not “operated on.”

Dr Mark Doyle offers facial fat transfer to all patients from Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.

What Areas Can I Increase Facial Volume?

A fat transfer in face procedure can treat many concerns. Patients generally request that their features be filled to make them look younger. Fat injections in the face are often done to areas such as the:

  • under eyes
  • cheeks and nasolabial folds
  • forehead /temples, and
  • lips & around the mouth (perioral)
  • Fat Grafting Under Eyes

Transferring fat underneath the eyes helps to reduce under-eye hollows or 'sunken eyes'. This has a refreshing result on the appearance of the face.

  • Fat Transfer to Cheeks

Often the cheeks are the first area to lose volume as we age. Adding more cheek fat helps us to appear more youthful. In cheek augmentation, Dr Doyle always strives to give patients a natural result - not an overdone look.

  • Fat Transfer to Nasolabial Folds

Individuals often don't like the deep folds that go from the nose to the mouth. Fat grafting can help to create a smoother appearance.

  • Fat Transfer to Forehead

Another unwanted sign of aging is the hollowing of the temple region. Dr Doyle can add fat to this region of the face to help create a more youthful appearance.

  • Facial Fat Transfer to Lips & Mouth Area

Fat transfer to the lips can address thinning lips, which is a telltale sign of aging. Adding volume to the lips creates a more youthful appearance.

In addition, if you have lines around your mouth - typically referred to as smokers' lines - fat transfer can smooth the skin and reduce these lines.

Benefits of Fat Transfer to The Face

Combining fat transfer with facelift surgery can dramatically enhance your results. Benefits of adding face fat include:

  • restore lost facial volume
  • can help you to look more youthful and refreshed
  • natural, long-lasting results, and
  • achieve a more dramatic facial rejuvenation

Face Fat Injections Procedure

Please Note – Dr Doyle only performs fat grafting face surgery as an ‘Add-on’ to another facial surgery (such as a lower face and neck lift).

This procedure is an outpatient procedure, meaning there is no overnight stay required. And the surgery is always performed under general anaesthesia at an accredited hospital.

During surgery, fat gets harvested from a donor site within your body.  This is usually the lower abdomen or inner thighs. After the fat is harvested, it gets injected into your desired facial area using micro droplets. This will help to create more fullness.

Recovery

As a general rule, fat transfer to face recovery time is about 2 weeks. You may notice a mild degree of bruising and swelling after fat transfer to face surgery.

This will last several days after your procedure, and resolve on its own. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks.

Right Candidate

If mid-face hollowing or sunken cheeks is a concern for you, fat transfer to face may be a good option. Furthermore, this fat transfer technique may be right for you if you have:

  • undereye hollows
  • sunken cheeks
  • deep nasolabial folds
  • and, you would like a more permanent solution to dermal fillers.

Please note that patients whose health is borderline may not be candidates for surgery.

Dr Doyle is the leading provider of facial fat transfer Australia has to offer. As a specialist, he’s been performing various types of facial enhancements for over 30 years. The addition of face fat transfer helps patients achieve their most flattering results.

Fat Transfer to Face Pros and Cons

Pros

As well as those benefits listed above, fat transfer can fill in wrinkles and correct facial asymmetries. As well as this, using your own body’s products (fat) is a good option compared to using artificial fillers.

Cons

Fat grafting is a surgical procedure that requires downtime. You may experience swelling and bruising as well as small scars on the face. As well as this, some of the fat injected into the face may be lost in the first few months.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

Yes, but, the scars from facial fat grafting are small and inconspicuous. This is because the procedure uses an extremely thin needle.

Ageing is the primary cause of face fat loss. As we age, we lose facial fat and volume due to a decrease in collagen and elastin. Facial volume loss can cause the face to look sunken and hollow.

While many older patients want to add fat to their face, some want to reduce it. The best way to reduce face fat is with diet and exercise. Performing facial exercises may also be a natural option to slim the face.

With a facial fat grafting procedure, results can last for years, decades, or even longer. However, surgery cannot prevent the natural aging process, so patients may notice changes to their results over time.

Further, as your weight changes, the new fat cells in the face can change in size. This may change or reverse the patient’s cosmetic outcome.

The risks associated with facial fat transfer are minimal. However, as with any surgery, there is always a small risk of infection, bleeding, and bruising. There is also a very small risk that facial fat grafting could lead to facial asymmetry.

Dr Doyle will go over all the risks associated with facial fat transfer during your consultation.

A typical fat transfer procedure takes between one and five hours to complete. This depends on what other treatments are being performed.

Facial fat transfer is performed under general anaesthesia so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. Any discomfort felt after the procedure can be easily managed with pain medication.

You will notice the results of fat transfer to the face immediately after surgery. However, it may take about 3 months for your results to settle completely.

Unfortunately not. Dr Doyle only performs this procedure as an optional extra to another surgical procedure.

Fat transfer to the face can be worth it if you lack confidence due to volume loss in your face. It can make the results of your facelift much more dramatic.
