Risks of Surgery

Every type of invasive procedure comes with its own set of risks and potential problems. This page outlines the general risks of plastic surgery.

All Surgery Carries Risk

Every type of invasive surgery comes with its own set of risks and potential problems. It’s important to understand the risks and what you can do to reduce or eliminate them.

The most common risks associated with plastic surgery are pain, swelling, bruising, and scarring around the incision site. These surgery risks are quite common and to be expected with most plastic surgery procedures. They can be resolved with time and specific aftercare instructions to reduce scarring.

This page is general in nature, and the risks specific to your procedure will be outlined in detail during your initial consultation.

Minimising Risks

Surgical risks can be minimised by choosing a qualified specialist plastic surgeon. Most of the time, this surgeon will work alongside a specialist anaesthetist. Choosing a doctor with respected qualifications has the biggest impact on minimising your potential for risks.

Generally, the healthier you are before your surgery, the less potential you have of experiencing the following risks. This includes being a non-smoker (or quitting for 6 weeks on either side of your surgery), being at a healthy weight, and having no pre-existing medical conditions.

General Risks of Surgery

As well as those risks listed above, the following is a list of general surgery risks:

  • Anaesthetic risks
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry
  • Allergy (to tape or dressings)
  • Bleeding (haematoma)
  • Chronic pain
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Fluid buildup (seroma)
  • Numbness
  • Necrosis
  • Wound separation
  • Death

Although uncommon, some of these risks can occur despite preventative measures taken. If you are concerned about any of the risks of surgery listed, please speak with Dr Doyle during your initial consultation.
