Neck Lift Surgery on the Gold Coast

Neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty) is a procedure that removes areas of excess skin and tissue from the neck region. It addresses changes in the neck and jawline by tightening underlying structures and re-draping the skin.

Neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty) is a procedure that addresses excess skin, localised fat deposits beneath the chin, and laxity in the neck muscles. The aim of this surgery is to reposition underlying tissues and remove excess skin to improve contour in the neck and jawline area. Results and recovery vary between individuals and depend on factors such as age, skin condition and overall health.

This procedure is usually performed as day surgery, allowing patients to return home on the same day. Some swelling and bruising are expected after surgery and will gradually settle over time. Recovery varies between individuals but may take several weeks.

What is a Neck Lift?

Neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty) is a surgical procedure that addresses excess skin, localised fat deposits and laxity in the neck muscles. It aims to improve contour and definition in the neck and jawline area by tightening underlying structures and removing areas of excess tissue.

A combined neck and chin lift can address changes across the entire neck region. Individuals who have developed excess skin following weight loss or age-related changes may consider discussing this procedure with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon to determine suitability.

Neck Lift Results

Dr Mark Doyle approaches neck lift surgery with the aim of achieving proportionate alignment between the facial and neck tissues. In some cases, neck lift and facelift procedures may be performed together to address excess skin and tissue in both areas during a single operation.

Dr Doyle is a Specialist Plastic Surgeon (FRACS) who performs neck lift surgery for patients from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast regions. Suitability for combined or individual procedures can only be confirmed following a consultation and clinical assessment.

Neck Lift Options

Submental Neck lift (Skin Only)

Also referred to as a chin or lower neck lift, this procedure focuses on removing areas of excess skin beneath the chin. In some cases, liposuction may be recommended when localised fat deposits are present in the neck or under the chin.

Neck Lift With Muscle Tightening (Platysmaplasty)

A platysmaplasty involves addressing the deeper layers of the neck by tightening the platysma muscle and removing excess skin or fat where indicated. Treating the underlying muscle can help improve the structural support of the neck and reduce visible banding or laxity in the central neck area.

Full Face Lift and Neck Lift

A combined face and neck lift involves performing both procedures during the same operation to address changes affecting the lower face, jawline and neck. This approach may be considered when there is laxity in multiple facial regions. Suitability for combined surgery can only be confirmed after a consultation and assessment by a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

Neck Lift Procedure

A neck lift operation with Dr Doyle is always performed at an accredited hospital under general anaesthesia. The procedure usually takes around 3 hours to complete.

During a neck lift procedure, incisions are typically placed behind the ear lobes and, in some cases, beneath the chin. Through these incisions, the skin is gently elevated and the underlying neck muscles (platysma) are tightened as required. The skin and deeper tissues are then re-positioned and secured with sutures.

Recovery

Recovery experiences vary between individuals. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising are expected after neck lift surgery, particularly under the chin. Swelling generally settles over several weeks but may take a few months to fully resolve.

A supportive head garment is usually recommended during the early recovery period to help manage swelling and protect the surgical area. Your surgeon will advise how long this garment should be worn and when normal activities can be gradually resumed, which is often after several weeks depending on individual healing.

Best Candidate

Neck lift surgery is an individualised procedure. It is not suitable for everyone. As a general rule, you must be healthy and a non-smoker (or willing to give up smoking). You must also have realistic expectations of what the surgery can achieve.

A neck lift may be suitable for you if you have:

  • excess fine lines in the neck area
  • loose excess skin
  • concerns around jaw definition

Individuals seeking to address changes in neck contour or skin laxity may consider discussing neck lift surgery during a consultation. Dr Mark Doyle will assess your individual anatomy and discuss whether this procedure is appropriate for your circumstances.

FAQs

Scars from neck lift surgery are typically located behind the ears and, in some cases, beneath the chin. The appearance of scars usually improves over time, though the degree of fading and duration of healing can vary between individuals.

The changes achieved with neck lift surgery are long-lasting; however, the ageing process will continue over time. The duration of results varies between individuals and depends on factors such as skin quality, lifestyle and overall health.

Improvements from neck lift surgery become more noticeable as swelling subsides over the weeks following the procedure. While most swelling tends to settle within the first few months, it may take up to a year for the tissues to fully stabilise and the final outcome to be visible.

Possible risks and complications associated with neck lift surgery include swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing. All potential risks will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr Mark Doyle to support an informed decision about your procedure.

A neck lift may address some fullness beneath the chin, although it is primarily performed to remove areas of excess skin and tighten underlying tissues. Where excess fat is the main concern, liposuction of the chin or neck area may be discussed as an alternative or complementary procedure. Dr Mark Doyle can advise on the most appropriate approach following a clinical assessment.

A mini neck lift is a surgical technique that focuses on removing excess skin and localised fat beneath the chin without tightening the deeper neck muscles. It is generally considered for individuals with mild to moderate changes in the lower neck area.

You’ll be asleep during your surgery so you should not feel any pain. You may experience some discomfort after surgery but this can be easily managed with pain medication.
