Brow Lift Surgery by Dr Mark Doyle

A brow lift is a surgical procedure that repositions the eyebrows and forehead tissues. It may be considered to address brow descent, forehead creases or differences in brow height.

Eyebrow lift surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure that raises the position of the brows. Also known as a forehead lift or endoscopic brow lift, this procedure repositions the tissues of the forehead and brow to address changes in the upper face related to ageing or muscle activity. It does this by raising the soft tissue and skin of the forehead and brow.

A brow lift is an outpatient procedure. Swelling and bruising are common after surgery and it can take 6 weeks for a full recovery.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift (forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that repositions the forehead and brow tissues. It may be performed to address brow descent, forehead creases, or skin folds that develop above the upper eyelids.

During the procedure, excess skin may be removed, underlying muscles adjusted, and tissues repositioned to support the brow and forehead area. The goal is to restore the brow to a more natural position relative to the upper face.

A brow lift may also be considered to:

  • Assist with vision in cases where excess upper eyelid skin or brow descent affects the visual field
  • Reduce the appearance of forehead creases caused by muscle activity or ageing
  • Lift the brows to a higher location on the forehead

Dr Doyle uses an endoscope to perform all eyebrow lifting surgery.

Brow Lift Results

Dr Mark Doyle performs brow lift surgery using an endoscopic technique, which involves small incisions typically placed within the hairline. This approach helps to minimise visible scarring, although scar appearance can vary between individuals.

During a brow lift, the forehead and brow tissues are repositioned to address brow descent and forehead creases. Dr Doyle plans each procedure to maintain brow movement and alignment with the patient’s facial anatomy.

Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle offers brow lift surgery to patients from Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, QLD.

Different Types of Brow Lift

There are several recognised techniques for brow lift surgery, including the endoscopic, coronal, and hairline approaches. Dr Mark Doyle commonly performs the endoscopic brow lift, which uses smaller incisions placed within the hairline. This method allows the brow tissues to be repositioned internally rather than lifting the skin alone. The choice of technique depends on each patient’s anatomy and treatment goals, and will be discussed during consultation.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

This is a minimally invasive technique that uses an endoscope, when compared to other brow lift techniques. The endoscope is a thin, tube-like instrument equipped with a tiny camera. This allows Dr Doyle to see inside the forehead and perform any necessary surgery without having to make large incisions.

Coronal Brow Lift

The coronal brow lift, also known as the traditional brow lift, involves an incision made across the top of the scalp within or behind the hairline. Through this approach, the forehead skin and underlying tissues are adjusted to reposition the brow and address forehead creases.

Dr Mark Doyle does not perform the coronal brow lift. He uses the endoscopic brow lift technique, which involves smaller incisions and internal adjustment of the brow tissues. The most appropriate surgical approach depends on individual anatomy and will be discussed during consultation.

Brow Lift Procedure

Eyebrows lift surgery happens under general anesthesia at an accredited hospital and usually takes one to two hours.

During this procedure, Dr Doyle generally makes small incisions behind your hairline and inserts the endoscope. He then lifts the underlying muscles and tissues, before anchoring them in place with sutures or small screws.

Recovery

Most people take one week off from work to recover. During this time, it’s important to sleep with your head elevated. Bruising and swelling are common immediately after surgery and will subside over time.

Strenuous exercise is restricted for 6 weeks after brow surgery. This is because it may cause increased swelling, bleeding, or disrupt the healing process. Restricted activities include swimming, gym workouts and running.

Recovery following a brow lift varies between individuals but generally takes several weeks. Your surgeon will provide guidance on postoperative care and when normal activities can be safely resumed.

Best Candidate

Suitability for brow lift surgery depends on several factors, including overall health, anatomy, and the reasons for considering the procedure. It is important to have a clear understanding of what the surgery can achieve and its limitations. A brow lift may be considered to address changes in brow position or forehead skin, but it does not alter a person’s overall facial characteristics.

Individuals in good physical health, who do not smoke and understand the potential risks and recovery process, may be appropriate candidates. Suitability can only be confirmed following consultation with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

  • Brow descent, where the eyebrows sit lower and may rest on or near the upper eyelids.
  • Deep lines or folds between the eyebrows (glabellar creases)
  • Horizontal forehead lines that develop due to ageing or repeated muscle activity.
  • Redundant or overhanging upper eyelid skin that can develop with age or brow descent.
  • Differences in brow height or position between the two sides of the face.

FAQs

A brow lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that elevates the position of one or both eyebrows. An endoscopic brow lift is a technique that uses a thin, tube-like instrument to lift your eyebrows instead of using long incisions.

A brow lift (forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that repositions the forehead and brow tissues. It may be considered to address brow descent, forehead creases or skin folds that develop with age. Depending on individual anatomy, the procedure can involve repositioning one or both eyebrows to restore alignment with the upper face.

Brow lift surgery can be performed on one or both sides of the forehead to reposition the eyebrows. The procedure may help improve alignment between the brows when differences in height or position are present.

All surgical procedures result in some degree of scarring. In an endoscopic brow lift, five small incisions are typically made—one on each temple and three across the upper forehead. These incisions are usually placed within or near the hairline to help minimise their visibility. The appearance of scars varies between individuals and generally improves over time.

The changes achieved with a brow lift are generally long-lasting; however, the natural ageing process continues over time. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle and gravity can influence how the forehead and brow areas change in the years following surgery. The duration of results varies between individuals.

Brow lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, meaning patients are not conscious during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling or tightness may occur during the recovery period. These effects are temporary and can usually be managed with prescribed pain relief and postoperative care as directed by your surgeon.

As with any surgical procedure, brow lift surgery carries potential risks and complications. These may include bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection or delayed wound healing. All potential risks will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr Mark Doyle to support an informed decision about your surgery.
