In this procedure, the fat is harvested from the body and gets transferred into an area of your face. This is generally in the cheeks, under-eyes or nasolabial folds. As a result, face fat transfer treatments can use your bodies own biological product to add volume to the face.
Please Note, Dr Doyle only performs facial fat grafting as an additional procedure to other surgical procedures. It can not be performed as a stand alone procedure.
What is a Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer is the administration of fat into the face to create a more volumised appearance. This adds volume to the face, smoothes facial areas, and fills in lines and facial creases.
Fat transfer face is sometimes called fat grafting, or fat injections. It’s a treatment for lost facial volume – which usually occurs as a result of aging. The procedure helps create a more smoother surface, particularly in the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area. It’s also beneficial for skin tightening on the face, as the addition of fat can fill loose skin to create a tighter appearance.
In this treatment, tiny amounts of fat are harvested, usually from your tummy or thighs. Then, micro droplets of this fat get injected into the desired facial regions to add volume.

Facial Fat Grafting
Dr Doyle believes that fat transfer for the face looks best when done in smaller amounts. The procedure should help your skin to be more volumised and firm.
Dr Mark Doyle offers facial fat transfer to all patients from Gold Coast and Brisbane, QLD.
What Areas Can I Increase Facial Volume?
A fat transfer in the face procedure can treat many concerns. Patients generally request that their facial features be filled to make them look more volumised. Fat injections in the face are often done to areas such as the:
- under eyes
- cheeks and nasolabial folds
- forehead /temples, and
- lips & around the mouth (perioral)
- Fat Grafting Under Eyes
Transferring fat underneath the eyes helps to reduce under-eye hollows.
- Fat Transfer to Cheeks
Often the cheeks are the first area to lose volume as we age. Adding more cheek fat can add volume. In cheek augmentation, Dr Doyle adds fat to the cheeks to increase their size.
- Fat Transfer to Nasolabial Folds
Individuals may have deep folds that go from the nose to the mouth. Fat grafting can help to create a smoother appearance.
- Fat Transfer to Forehead
A normal sign of aging is the hollowing of the temple region. Dr Doyle can add fat to this region of the face to increase the volume and decrease the lines for a more smoother forhead.
- Facial Fat Transfer to Lips & Mouth Area
Fat transfer to the lips can increase thinning lips. Adding volume to the lips for more volumised lips
In addition, if you have lines around your mouth - typically referred to as smokers' lines - fat transfer may be suitable to smooth the skin and reduce these lines.
Benefits of Fat Transfer to The Face
Combining fat transfer with facelift surgery can volumise and smooth your results. Benefits of adding face fat include:
- Increase lost facial volume
- Smoother facial areas
- Use your bodies own biological fat
Face Fat Treatment Procedure
Please Note, Dr Doyle only performs fat grafting face surgery as an ‘Add-on’ to another facial surgery, such as a lower face and neck lift.
This procedure is an outpatient procedure, meaning there is no overnight stay required. The surgery is always performed under general anaesthesia at an accredited hospital.
During surgery, fat gets harvested from a donor site within your body. This is usually the lower abdomen or inner thighs. After the fat is harvested, it gets administered into your preferred facial area using microdroplets. This will allow Dr Doyle to create more fullness.
Recovery
As a general rule, fat transfer to face recovery time is about 2 weeks. You may notice a mild degree of bruising and swelling after fat transfer to face surgery.
This will generally last several days after your procedure, and resolve on its own. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks.
Suitable Candidate
If the mid-face is hollowing or the cheeks have decreased in size, fat transfer to the face may be a suitable option for you. Furthermore, Dr Doyle’sfat transfer technique may be suitable for you if you have:
- undereye hollows

- deep nasolabial folds
Please note, that patients whose health is not optimal may not be candidates for surgery.

Fat Transfer to Face Pros and Cons
Pros
As well as those benefits listed above, fat transfer can fill in lines and correct facial hollows. As well as this, using your own body’s products (fat) is an optimal option when compared to using artificial fillers.
Cons
Fat grafting is a surgical procedure that requires downtime. You may experience swelling and bruising as well as small scars on the face. As well as this, some of the fat administered into the face may be lost in the first few months post surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)
Yes, the scars from facial fat grafting are generally quite small. This is due to the procedure using an extremely thin needle.
Aging is the primary cause of face fat loss. As we age, we lose facial fat and volume due to a decrease in collagen and elastin. Facial volume loss can cause the face to look recessed and hollow.
While many patients want to add fat to their face, some want to reduce it. The best way to reduce face fat is with diet and exercise. Performing facial exercises may also be an option to slim the face.
With a facial fat grafting procedure, results can last for many years. However, surgery cannot prevent the natural aging process, so patients may notice changes to their results over time.
Further, as your weight changes, the new fat cells in the face can change in size. This may change or reverse the patient’s cosmetic outcome.
The risks associated with facial fat transfer are minimal. However, as with any surgery, there is always a small risk of infection, bleeding, and bruising. There is also a very small risk that facial fat grafting could lead to facial asymmetry.
Dr Doyle will go over all the risks associated with facial fat transfer during your consultation.
A typical fat transfer procedure takes between one and five hours to complete. This depends on what other treatments are being performed.
Facial fat transfer is performed under general anaesthesia so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. Any discomfort felt after the procedure can be easily managed with pain medication.
You will notice the results of fat transfer to the face immediately after surgery. However, it may take about 3 months for your final results to be seen.
Unfortunately not. Dr Doyle only performs this procedure as an optional extra with an additional surgical procedure.
